The Standard Varies, based on personal interpretation...
"...When the enemy shall come in like a flood, The Spirit of The LORD shall lift up a standard against him." Isaiah 59:19
"Knowing this first, that NO prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation." II Peter 1:20
God's Word IS the standard by which a Christian is to live, ALL of it not just the promises for the believer, but the obedience unto death of self part. God's Word is NOT like shopping where one gets to pick and choose, yet almost everyone claiming to be His followers does just that, pick and choose. It's "what my heart tells me to do"; it's "what I feel I should do". There are multitudes of 'christian' books out there that teach a humanistic view of The Standard we've been given; "surely God can't be that harsh as to punish sin, He's a God of LOVE, you interpret it however you like but I'm not accepting that teaching."
No, The Standard given doesn't change with time, nor is it subject to cultural influences or interpretion by religious institutions of man. Idolatry is still sin, fornication is still sin, lying is still sin, trusting in man is still sin, and disobedience is still sin. The punishment remains the same, the rewards for obedience are the same, and the Standard is as it was given. Obey and live...disobey and die; cut and dried... black and white, blessings or curses.
“But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us,”
