Whatever one might say about Hobart Freeman, one thing is certain--the man taught the Word of God and we, like the eagles, gathered together to feast on the meat.

Experience can be both good and bad. It is good when we experience the things we see taught in the Word of God, but it also can be a stumbling block when there is a disconnect between our experience and the truth of the message taught.

The temptation is to use our experience in the formation of our theology.

The context of Paul's statement in Romans 3:4 is his defense of the Word of God in spite of those who were given the Word and did not believe it.

Rom 3:1-4 What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit [is there] of circumcision? Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God. For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

Here his point is that the Jews were given the Word (the Oracles of God), and whether the Word given was received and believed, or not received and not believed; it is still the Word of God, and it is the Word that forms our theology, not the experience or lack thereof. The Word carries its own vindication no matter the experience of the hearers.

No doubt someone will read this and conclude that I think those in the examples above "did not believe" and that we should hold fast to the Word regardless of "their unbelief," but that conclusion would be wrong. The point is that our theological underpinnings should be based solely on the Word of God (which we were taught) and not on the experience of others, and not on our own experience--if our experience to this point hasn't mirrored the Word of God.

Bad experiences will never make good theology, but good theology will eventually make good experiences--if we faint not.

Gal 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
