Hey guys (and gals)

I just ran across an article that made my blood boil. It's in the February issue of Christianity Today (I got a free issue.) The Headlines section contains a report entitled "Tongues Tied". It seems the Southern Baptists have voted to bar new missionary candidates who practice a "private prayer language" from serving on the mission field (50-15). I know, why should I care, but what struck me is that they decided that this new policy wouldn't affect current IMB (International Mission Board) which was odd until I read further. It turns out that the president, Jerry Rankin, has practiced tongue speaking for 30 years!

Ok, here is the ironic part--Tom Hatley a trustee chairman said that during interviews with missionary candidates it became apparent that those who practiced a private prayer language gave differing explanations of it varying from an "angelic language" to a "revelatory" gift of the Holy Spirit.

huh?

How on earth would he expect them to know what it was--given the SBC's own lack of knowledge and teaching on the matter? Absurdity in action here.

William

Right Mark,

I don't know how they do it. I say if you are going to be a cessationist at least be consistent! Here is a link to a former cessationist and his excellent article concerning how they accuse charismatics of forming their theology based upon experience when in reality they are the ones who form their theology based on experience (or the lack thereof.)
