He's going to a Church in Gardendale AL (my brother lives there) a little over 2 hours away. I'm going to try to go and hear him speak.
Duncan, if you see this you might want to come... and be sure to bring your dad along!

He was the same Steve that I had remembered except he looked more like his dad, Stan Hill! The Church was one that he had last visited back in 1982.
Of course the last time I heard Steve teach was almost 18 years ago... wow! We did run into him out in Kansas City back in the early nineties but he wasn't teaching at that conference.
He still uses the same phraseology "make no beans about it" (a true Steve-ism.<g>) It was a very good message.
His focus was on the Father's love for us, the same subject as his two new books.
He started with John 17:3 "And this is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, Whom Thou hast sent."
ginosko=to know (by experience or effort); to acquire knowledge, become acquainted with; hence, to come or get to know, learn, perceive.
The "Knowing God" message is definitely what I remember Him for back in the FA days. Two hour(+) messages filled with thought provoking teaching. For some reason this message was viewed by some at FA as being "off message", as I've mentioned elsewhere. We were brought up with a "healthy" fear of God type message that (imo) became "unhealthy" because we did not acquaint ourselves with God's other attributes, i.e. a "loving" Father.
As Steve says "He really *likes* us." (--I think he uses the phrase "likes us" because "loves us" no longer has the impact it should!)
The reason Steve has such an emphasis on this message is because of his background (yes Hombre, he said it again... I know you've heard it hundreds of times!) ...a background of holiness, one where he felt as if he constantly had to prove himself to God, in order to measure up.
Ps.18 was the next passage and he pointed out that the prophetic words that were pronounced to David tried him (like Joseph) until they were fulfilled. Ps 18 was written at the end of this trying period. (I found it extremely profitable to read the whole chapter later in light of the message, it shows God's zealousness when it comes to His children.)
The attitude that God is just waiting for us to make a mistake so He can swat us is just plain wrong. He pointed out that oftentimes we treat the "immature" among us as "rebellious" because we think that this is the way God deals with us. What happened to the Lord "delighting" in his children? He pointed out that earthly fathers don't have much expectation from babies (puke & poop) so why should we expect that God's dealings with His children would be different.
We don't expect our kids to walk around with a portfolio trying to impress us do we?
We love them even when they are knee deep in poop! Our love never changes and neither does our Father's love for us. Even as we mature and make mistakes we should realize that God's love never changes toward us. Steve used the example of Peter's denial as an example here.
At any rate, I plan to get his new books, and yes, he still had his "Covenant of Healing" book available.
I'm glad I got to go!

Unfortunately I only got to say hello, he had other people waiting.
He did mention his sons (Lance and Jonathan) in the message, one lives in Chicago and the other in California (Long Beach I think).
