Have any of you read the book "War on the Saints" by Jesse Penn-Lewis and Evan Roberts?

I read it ten or so years ago and was very impressed with its relevance to our time. There were a few things that seemed a little too far in one direction but overall it was an eye-opener.

I've just picked it up again and think it needs to be on every Christian's must-read-list.

Anybody?

Yes, War on the Saints is still in print but my wife found that it is reproduced on the web. I guess the copyright has expired.

Be sure to look for the unabridged version... the copy I have mentions that some group that didn't believe in possession reprinted an abridged version which took the heart out of the book. Also, on one of the web versions there was a long disclaimer because the book was written by a woman <g> but in the end they concluded that since it was unlikely that a book could usurp authority over a man it may be ok to read.

This was one of the books brother Freeman recommended way way back and I wish I had read it the day after I got saved.

Hello everyone.

Hombre, thanks for the info on this forum. It is a breath of life from the other forum.

Anyway...I do have a copy of the unabridged version of War on the Saints. If anyone wants a copy of it, you can get it from Rare Christian Books for $29.95. Here is the link: http://www.rarechristianbooks.com/. It is in the Out of Print Section.

I have purchased a number of tapes and books through these people and I would highly recommend them.

God bless.

Gary,

Sometimes I wonder if people don't try to recreate what experiences they read about in books.( or hear about through testimonies ) And what if in the books someone took extra liberties, in their zeal to 'help' God, by exaggerating upon what really happened. Or maybe, like we have just seen today in Lakeland,Florida and Bentley; there were 'angels of light' at work and the people who recorded these events didn't know the difference between the genuine workings of God and a spirit of deception working counterfeit signs and wonders.
Books are great for learning and inspiration, but we must remember 'THE BOOK' is the guide in measuring truth. Man has a way of embellishing, in order to either, promote the book; help God; or make themselves appear to be something they're not. Just because somethings written in a book and promoted by a 'christian', doesn't make it true. Imagine if someone wrote about Todd Bentley and the 'Lakeland Revival' and left out all the negative experiences and much of the truth concerning Todd Bentley and what's been exposed about him. Just the signs and wonders according to newspapers and articles in magazines. Throw in some video footage of the 'commissioning by the apostles' and a hundred years from now, someone reading about it could think wow, God really was at work in those meetings. Not too far fetched, is it?
When God gave us the warnings throughout the NT concerning the deceptions and methods that satan would use to destroy the church; He told us over and over to 'take heed'; 'to study to shew ourselves approved unto God'; 'be viligant'; 'put on the armour of God'. The deceptions will come at us from every angle imaginable and we're only going to recognize them and overcome them by, first, by God's grace; and being grounded in The Word.

Just something to think about....

btw: I love to read, but I'm learning to
not be so quick to believe everything I
read...unless it's from God's Word.

One thing we must keep in mid is that "we" can do nothing. None of us can convince even one person to receive Christ unless that person has been quickened by the Holy Spirit to receive Him. Our mandate is to "preach the Gospel". God by His Holy Spirit, will add to the flock as He Wills. We are not responsible to bring them in, we are responsible to preach the Gospel. It is God's job to quicken the Word to those whom He has ordained (Acts 13:48) to believe.

We are to be faithful to what He has commanded us to do, and He will take care of the rest.

It is sad, Hombre, yet I have found it to be true.

You mentioned taking someone under your wings to teach them...
I've been attempting to do that for the past few months, and I've learned a lot about myself, and one of them is that I'm not a 5-fold teacher.(not that I ever thought I was) And like Jim (NBF56) just said, if God don't open their eyes and hearts....We can't do anything except proclaim the gospel to them...And not become frustrated if the person doesn't show immediate results.( of which I've been guilty, more than once)
But don't send me any gold stars just yet,Hombre...It's helping ME to grow and examine myself in light of The Word, and I find myself seeing things that I hadn't seen before.

But God is faithful and He gives wisdom and understanding to those who seek after it...

I read it long ago and found it to be good. I believe it was in the back that it talked about the use of divination. So few are aware of this going on in Assemblies. The fellow I knew in our body would put a message in a envelope and hand it to the pastor or leader. He said he was a prophet. The letters identified were messages which had a message of something a preacher doesn't want to tell a congregation about himself. It was supposed to be a word of knowledge. I have met those who tried to control me this way. The bottom line is all my sins that are embaressing from the past are under the blood. I have no conviction when saying no that is not true about me. All the things I tell is my business. The rest is under the blood and even God forgets them. praise God. I mostly told this to help other brethren who may be under control by means of embarressment of those who have another spirit. The saints should all relise where we all come from and not look down on others. 5-fold ministers have no excuse for this. I see how some are now no longer in the ministry, could it be Holy Spirit removal because of these things? I think so.
