I am reading a book by Philip Yancey titled, "What's So Amazing About Grace?" I have found it to be very convicting in areas where many of us have abode for however long periods of time. (Some longer than others,SMILE>)

He covers grace from a perspective of real life examples and uses his own life to make his points. There's parts on legalism that hits home and additudes concerning forgiveness. There's his perspective of the modern day church, evangelical christians, political activism, social issues(racism, abortion, homosexuality), moral issues. and other things facing 'the church' today.

Here's a quote that I really agreed with(and there were quite a few)...

"...the proof of spiritual maturity is not how "pure" you are but awareness of your impurity. That very awareness opens the door to grace."

“But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us,”

Ahhh James

I read that book several years ago. It would not be overstating the case to say it had a devastating effect on me. I didn't know what was right but I sure did know what was wrong. And wrong was me in capital letters.

Bigoted, opinionated( in the wrong sense) full of myself, proud. I'd throw in some more adjectives if I could think of some.

It was around that time (10 yrs ago) that I started examining beliefs I have. Not so much the spiritual but mostly the cultural & societal & political. All of us have deeply held beliefs that we are certain of and obviously inspired by God. Or else why would we have them? Ergo they must be God.
Social and political issues are usually emotionally held and close to the heart.

It had a huge impact on me. I would recommend anyone reading this thread to go get the book. Its well worth the read.

Yes, so would I...and this is from the guy who was so pure and holy that he wouldn't read anything beside HEF books and The Bible...Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.
