In a recent bible study here, we came across Romans 9:22

22What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:

and were quite confused. We had much discussion, but were left uncertain. Could anyone give me a practical implication of this verse please?

Thanks so much!

No Problem Brother. Heres the context:

20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?
25 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.

There are several levels of truth taught here, just as in all scripture. On one level Paul is teaching about God's grace transferring from the Jew but also to the Gentile believers.

On another level, God's Absolute Sovereignty in being able to do exactly as He wills with his creation... some people are "fitted to destruction", which leads into the Doctrine of Predestination and Election. "Jacob he loved and Esau he hated, etc...", "making one lump(person) for honour, and one person for dishonour"

If you could be more specific in your question, you will get better help. What were some of your people saying about the verse?

Thanks so much, that's very helpful. Basically, we were confused, as you normally hear, in reply to the "Why does God let bad things happen to people" question, that God doesn't do bad, it is Satan, ect...
but this verse seems to be conveying the idea that God does create people for bad, or to show his wrath. This is mostly where we were confused I guess... but we were really looking for any insight we could find at all...

Thanks!

The apostle Paul was very aware of the sovereignty of God, that God is in charge of everything, even the activity of the devil. "Vessels" is a word that often refers to clay jars and bowls that were so common in that time. Some of the clay jars that did not yield to the potter's hands were marred and dinted and used for rubbish and waste, ultimately doomed to be thrown away. Other jars that were made from good clay that yielded to the potter's hand were used as drinking vessels. So it is with people.

Amazed smitten astonished stunned floored blown away astounded shocked flabbergasted surprised wonderfully devastated awed shattered overwhelmed incredulous speechless sense of wonder at the love of God.
