The answer is a lot of people. Even important people like Jesus Paul James and Solomon. I've heard in various places lately people commenting about our words and their effect on our lives. Someone was "wrenching" Solomon's words out of their context. Someone else talked about a family member fearful of making a bad confession. Another said their husband was writing up a response to those of us who believe our words matter. The point is he was going to set the record straight.

In light of so many comments (and more) I thought I would slip my thoughts in as well. My contention is that words are spiritual they matter and have an effect on our lives.

A bit of background. When God created our world he made "us" partly spiritual partly physical. It was a new kind of creation. The point is that the rest of our world was partly spiritual and partly physical as well. There is much to say on that subject but it's just background to what I have to say. The subject here though is words. Words are also partly physical partly spiritual.

When Jesus was making his kingly entry into Jerusalem (Luke 19/35-40) The Pharisees were objecting to the crowds praising him. Rightfully so if he was only human. I'd be surprised if anyone reading here believes that though. Jesus' reply was "If these don't praise me the stones will cry out" vs 40. I don't believe Jesus was just talking in hyperbole, exaggeration or even just making a point. He said that because he understood the nature of our world. Partly physical partly spiritual. Even the stones on the ground are partly spiritual. God in the flesh entering his own holy city was going to be praised. If people wouldn't do it then creation would.

Jesus said, "For of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks". Luke 6/45 Our words come out of our hearts. Out of the spiritual aspect of our humanity. Words are as spiritual as everything else around us. They matter.

Solomon had much to say about words. There are verses in proverbs on various subjects that speak to Solomon's deep understanding of spiritual issues. Words are one of them There are some vs that are inexplicable if you take a spiritual component away from them. Obviously, there are vs about speech that is just very good advice. If you go around shooting your mouth off all the time you will end up in trouble.

But what about Prov. 18/21? Death and life are in the power of the tongue. What does that mean? For sure one can use words to hurt someone. But there is no deeper meaning there? What about vs 20? "A man's belly will be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth and with the increase of his lips he shall be filled" Does that mean a good piece of cherry pie will satisfy us? Or is it speaking of something spiritual?

Prov 23/7 as he thinks within himself so is he. Words are spiritual they come out of the spiritual nature of our heart. We think wrong things we will eventually say them. Then we're snared by the words of our mouth. Prov. 6/2

Proverbs 13/2, 13/3 10/11, 10/21, 12/14, 15/4, 16/24

Most of those verses are inexplicable if we see words as only a means of communication.

What about Paul he had some things to say

Rom. 10/9-10 "with the heart an believes . . . with the mouth confession is made
Salvation as we know is more than belief. It's also confession. eg. words
11Cor. 4/13 "I believed therefore I spoke"
Words come out of the heart

Then the apostle John comes along:

Rev. 12/11 They overcame him (the devil) with the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. The devil is a spiritual foe. Sounds on the air are going to overcome a demonic spiritual personality? It is obviously the faith in our heart as expressed by our words

Here is James. He spoke right to the point.
James 3/2-5
He is talking about our tongue meaning our words. If we can get a handle on our tongue our words our speaking he says we can get a handle on our body or life. Vs 2 Like a bit in a horse's mouth or a rudder on a ship, our tongue or words guide the direction of our life. Vs 3-4, Solomon said that in a half dozen ways.

Some ending thoughts.

I have had a real interest in life before Noah's flood for a long time. I've done a fair bit of reading on the subject. There were in ancient times (heathen) men who understood these things. There are very old (secular) writings that speak of men using "Words of Power". I don't recommend anyone try it or look for it. My point is that there were those in ancient times who understood that words were spiritual and not just sounds carried by the air to someone's ear. It's not just a doctrine taught by the faith teachers.

There is also a demonic aspect to this. Some who need deliverance speak out of that. Prov. 12/18 there is he that speaks like the piercings of a sword.

We are not referring here to the Christian equivalent of incantations or spells. Or mental suggestion. Some that oppose us refer to that. But we are partly spiritual and so are words and they come out of that spiritual nature we have. We need to have a careful thoughtful approach to what and how we speak. That's good advice to all of us on how to live. But with death and life being in the power of the tongue it's also something we should take serious heed to.

The Lord gave me a vision once. I said something positive while praying and then watched as my confession sailed away and a spirit ran after it leaping and trying to catch it. I got the point.

So my conclusion is . . . . . . . Prov. 6/2-5 "Thou art snared with the words of our mouth . . ."

That is good advice. But as I've said about 10 times here it is also spiritual. When I realize I said something I shouldn't have I take it back. I do not want something I said to direct my life in a direction I don't want! If words can go out then they can come back. If necessary I ask the Lords forgiveness then repudiate them and take them back. One can go too far with this of course. Bering fearful to speak always examining yourself watching everyone else. Obviously some common sense is needed here. But according to James 3, our life is directed by the words of our mouth good and bad. Let us use our words in common sense ways but also be aware they will direct our life.
