titus 3:9

"But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and
contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are
unprofitable and vain."

I believe this verse shuts down our consideration
and analysis of Bible contradictions - genealogies especially
and debates generally and arguments about the law
- all these fit the "contradictions" topic. Here Paul
says to avoid these types of contentious topics.

Does anyone recall where HEF ever dealt with the topic
of Bible contradictions?

Personally I don't remember any specific sermons directed toward the topic of biblical contradictions but it seemed
that things were dealt with in the course of normal study. I believe it was E.J. Young that had written a book that
was geared toward biblical contradictions; it was pretty popular in our circles but I'm not sure it was because of some
recommendation from "the pulpit"!

Over the years, maybe in direct violation of the passage, I've looked at some of those supposed contradictions and come
away with my faith strengthened. I didn't debate the issue with others, it was more of a private study.

When it comes right down to it I'm amazed that, in so much material, there are so few difficulties presented. A few
years ago I came across some of David Daniel's (from Chick Publications) YouTube videos where he specifically dealt
some of the difficult passages, strictly from the standpoint of the KJV translation, and I marveled at the deftness of
his work. He pretty much is a KJV only person person but his defense of the translation was solid enough to be
persuasive to a high degree!

Not wanting to be an "heretick" or find myself asking foolish questions do you have more thoughts on specifics or are
your interests geared more toward the "avoidance" aspect of the passage?

Blessings,
William

Hi jman,

Long time since we've heard from you, glad to see you're still around. I don't have anything to add to your thread, just wanted to say Hi... so I'll hush up now.

Hi William,

The avoidance part is my interest.

Any specifics w/r contradictions would
very probably disobey Paul in this verse.

Plus I wanted feedback from the collective
memory on this forum w/r HEF.

I can see where Paul's advice is wise, especially toward new believers... but even those gray-head's of the faith should keep themselves from spinning their wheels in the mud of fruitless arguments.

There might be some merit though when the doctrine of inspiration is being defended but not merely for the sake of argumentativeness, that probably wouldn't yield much fruit.

Great to see you again!

Blessings,
William

Good to see you again jman. I can't answer your question but I'm going to look for the book William mentioned.

Hi Jman,

Many Biblical doctrines become areas of contention. If you believe something different then another Christian these days, sometimes they like to let you know what real truth is all about. If someone believes their right on a doctrine it does little good to talk to them about certain subjects. Just my opinion.

Don't know if HEF ever covered the subject of Bible contradictions.

In Him,
Gary

I was just listening to the Zechariah series and found at least one instance where it is shown how HEF dealt with an apparent contradiction... after dealing with the faith of God's people in the inspiration of Scriptures (making sure that our confidence is in the Lord!) almost as an afterthought he deals with the actual so-called contradiction. This seems to be typical of the way I remember him handling such things.

You can go directly to it if you'll skip to about 28 minutes into the message:
