Whatever one might say about Hobart Freeman, one thing is certain--the man taught the Word of God and we, like the eagles, gathered together to feast on the meat.

Experience can be both good and bad. It is good when we experience the things we see taught in the Word of God, but it also can be a stumbling block when there is a disconnect between our experience and the truth of the message taught.

The temptation is to use our experience in the formation of our theology.

Quote:

"My Church doesn't speak in tongues therefore tongues are not a valid experience for the Church."

Rom 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar;

Quote:

"My aunt died while praying for healing, therefore healing must not be God's will." (After all, she was the most godly woman I know.)

Rom 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar;

Quote:

"Hobart Freeman taught healing was God's will for the Church, but many in the Church died... and so did he. God must be against that sort of thing."

Rom 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar;

The context of Paul's statement in Romans 3:4 is his defense of the Word of God in spite of those who were given the Word and did not believe it.

Rom 3:1-4 What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit [is there] of circumcision? Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God. For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

Here his point is that the Jews were given the Word (the Oracles of God), and whether the Word given was received and believed, or not received and not believed; it is still the Word of God, and it is the Word that forms our theology, not the experience or lack thereof. The Word carries its own vindication no matter the experience of the hearers.

No doubt someone will read this and conclude that I think those in the examples above "did not believe" and that we should hold fast to the Word regardless of "their unbelief," but that conclusion would be wrong. The point is that our theological underpinnings should be based solely on the Word of God (which we were taught) and not on the experience of others, and not on our own experience--if our experience to this point hasn't mirrored the Word of God.

Bad experiences will never make good theology, but good theology will eventually make good experiences--if we faint not.

Gal 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Blessings,

William

I was doing some reading this morning and came across this post by William made 11 years ago, I found it encouraging and an excellent reminder. Amen! It is sooo easy to allow experiences dictate theology, it's the nature of people without faith and grounding in God's Word to do so.

Yesterday marked 500 years since Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on a church door in Wittenberg, Germany (Oct.31, 1517). From this 'awakening' the Reformation was birthed and among other truths that were rediscovered were the 5 Solos. Solas Scriptura means scripture alone...the others are Sola Fide, faith alone; Sola Gratia, grace alone; Solas Christus, Christ alone; Soli eo gloria, glory to God alone. Remember, at that time Rome dictated what was of God and what God 'said' through their own rules and regulations. The scriptures were only in Latin and the common man didn't have Bibles or access to truth except as the Catholic church and Pope decided what was and wasn't 'truth', Martin translated the NT and then the OT into German so everyone could read God's Word for themselves. It started a massive change and the results are very evident today.

The pastor where I attend church preached on this truth Sunday, the importance of faith in God's Word and the daily battle to hold to it in face of the society today.

It's good to remember and reflect, we're told to do this, it helps keep us on course and focused.
