Mahalia Jackson could sing gospel music in a way that exposed her soul(so to speak). Being from the south (New Orleans) and surrounded by 'soul/blues' music, she had a way of making the listener 'feel' the music. After moving north to Chicago as a teenager she devoted her life to gospel music. Known as 'The Queen of Gospel' she was constantly encouraged to switch over to secular music(she actually mentored Aretha Franklin, who later became known as the Queen of Soul) but she never did, believing God had called her to sing for His glory. It's amazing how many great musicians came out of the delta/bayou region of Mississippi/Louisana.

Hi Hodge. Good to hear you're doing well as I've been wondering. It's been on my mind to ask around as I don't have your email. I'll make more of an effort and get in touch.

How cool is this? We've got the inventor of Rap music, Brodav9, and the author of old time religion, Hardbones, as members of the forum...Who'd thunk-it?
Couldn't resist that... Only kidding, love you both...
