I think it was taught that the "farmers almanac" was occult and should be avoided at all cost. What little I have seen of this book I know they do endorse the Horoscope and other questionable material. But is everything wrong in this book?
Before anyone breaks out your tar and feathers let me explain what I am thinking here.
I have been wondering about the "Moon" and its phases. We know the Moon affects the tides of the oceans, but does it affect other things as well.
I know an older Christian man in his eighties who said: He use to make fun of people for years who planted certain crops by the moon phases. Certain root vegetables are said to grow better if you plant them when the dark side of the moon is towards the earth. He went on to say his vegetables never did good until he decided to plant his vegetables when there was no full moon and he found that his vegetables grew much better when planting at certain times of the year.
There you have it, if the moon can affect the tides, could it not affect other things as well. I think if anything it is because of the gravitational pull, but not convinced of this.
The Bible does say:
Psalm 121:6
The sun shall not strike you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
So there is something that takes place where the moon can smite a person by night, right?
Maybe there is something to the phases of the Moon having an affect on men.
Don't think just yet I have went out on the deep end, but when I planted "turnips" last fall it was just all tops and did not produce any turnips, and the beets were the same way. We just went out and put seeds in the garden with no consideration to where the moon was and my whole crop was just tops.
Are there any words of wisdom out there, before I consider hanging garlic from a pole near the garden?

I know that lots of people around here follow the Farmers Almanac. The moon has bearing on the activity of animals and fish as well, people fish according to the Almanac. There are two feed and seed stores across the railroad track by me and they give out small copies of the Almanac for free (the bigger book is a couple bucks). I had gardens for a dozen years or so and didn't go by the moon to plant and never noticed any difference, but then again I wasn't taking notes and comparing.
I do think the Farmers Almanac was considered taboo(along with gazillion other things), I'm sure if there's a horoscope included in it then that was the rub. I do remember when first being saved and hearing HEF's teaching I threw out a lot of stuff that either he or my peers decided was occult based <and I obviously agreed>. (and some of it was....but then again some wasn't) I just wasn't spiritually mature enough to discern for myself and certainly didn't want to do anything displeasing to God (still don't)but I've learned there is a difference between liberty and bondage and Romans 14 helped a lot.<grin>
BTW: Humans react to the moon cycles differently also, according to what I've heard on the 'news', criminal activity increases on nights with full moons.

william wrote on Tue, 01 March 2016 21:04 | We haven't done any of the 'root' vegetables but one thing I did last year might also explain what happened to your 'top' growth... we decided that we wanted a 'raised bed' garden so I went out and bought material to build it and then I filled it with potting soil from Home Depot.
Well, what happened is that we had some of the tallest tomato plants I had ever seen but not too many tomatoes. Turns out that I bought the soil that was designed for flowers and not vegetables. I didn't even know that there was a difference but I do now.
I probably won't go out and buy an almanac but if you do, and get some good tips, I'll receive advice from a brother! <grin>
Blessings,

That's interesting, because we did the same thing and had the same experience. I built a raised garden bed for my wife. When we planted the tomatoes they grew tall with a lot of leaves, but put out very few tomatoes. We thought we planted too many to close. I also used plain top soil but was very diligent with the miracle grow, applying it every two weeks. Part of our problem is we have some shade in the afternoon and I bought cheap spindly plants from a lumber yard instead of a green house, trying to save a buck.
The only tips I have is "trial and error" gardening, with lots of miracle grow.

I too did the raised bed garden (also the 'square foot' garden) back in the early 90's and had reasonable success...I do recall how startled I was one morning when I moved aside a large zucchini leaf and there was a young rabbit, it startled him as well because he took off before I could say, "what's up doc?"
Talking about gardening makes me want to move back to the country...especially after driving home last night through some of the most intense rain and wind I've seem in some time. If I lived down here I wouldn't have the 90+ mile daily round trip commute.
I never take for granted the protection from The Lord and I never want to shy away from giving testimony of His faithfulness in every area of life...after I got home I saw on the news that a tornado was wreaking havoc just a couple miles from where I was traveling along I65. Praise Jesus for giving His angels charge over me to keep me in all my ways.

Wow!! I don't know whether to laugh or cry about that. Thats more than I drive professionally.

Nor the moon by night.
I think that is speaking of the occult. In fact I claim the entire Psalm ever day along with Ps 91.
Having said that I do think as I've said here before the stars have a spiritual influence on this world and us. That is clear in the bible. Gen 1, Book of Job etc. I don't have any idea of what it is or how it works though. That is simple understanding that has been lost to humanity and outside a revelation from the Lord should be avoided.
