DOMINANT EMPIRES OF THE BIBLICAL WORLD FROM ABRAHAM TO CHRIST
Dates given for the Empires of the Near East refer only to an Empire's period of dominance from Abraham to Christ. Some existed prior to these dates (Egypt, Babylon, Assyria.) Egypt's kingdom preceded Abraham, and co-existed with the Babylonian and Assyrian. Abraham was born in 2167 B.C.
Egypt (Egyptian Dynasty begins 2900 B.C. Egypt begins
2167-1100 B.C. to decline about 1100 B.C.)
Assyria (Nineveh fell in 612 B.C. 1100-612 B.C.)
Babylonia (Nabopolassar, Nebuchadnezzar's father, established
the Neo-Babylonian Empire in 625 B.C. when he
revolted against Assyria 625-539 B.C.)
Persia (King Cyrus permitted the Jews to return to
Palestine after their 70 years in captivity 539-
331 B.C.
Greece (Alexander the Great had conquered the world by
331 B.C. In Palestine from 167-37 B.C. the Jews
gained independence and were ruled by the
Maccabean priests. This ended in 37 B.C. when
Herod the Great began to reign in Judea
331-63 B.C.)
Rome (Palestine was under Roman rule during the time
of Christ and the N.T. era. Jerusalem was
destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D.
because of a Jewish revolt) Rome fell in
476 A.D. 63-476 A.D.
Constantine, a Christian Emperor, issued
the Edict of Milan in 312 A.D. which
granted freedom of religion to all,
including Christians. Until this time
they had suffered great persecution from
Rome to Byzantium (Constantinople.) Rome
fell in 476 A.D. to the barbarians. In
the 6th century A.D. Italy bacame subject
to Constantinople until the Papacy gained
political power later. The Eastern Empire
(Greek Orthodox) and Western Empire
(Roman Catholic) both claimed spiritual
supremacy. The Eastern Empire continued
after the fall of Rome until 1453 A.D.
when it fell to the Ottoman Turks.
Constantinople is called today - Istanbul
and belongs to Turkey.
