I think my Messianic friends have a good arguement about the proper day for Sabbath being on Saturday. Constitine(sp?) came along and changed everything by helping to anchor paganism in the church and Sabbath was just one of the changes.
Faith Ministries has a booklet on the subject and Dr. Freeman thinks Sabbath was Saturday, but now it is Sunday.
I know I am free, and can do it anyday I please, but how do you all feel?
I think this is really an interesting topic and there is good debating material for both sides.
Blessings,
GWB

Mercy me, we just getting after it today, aren't we?
Hey Gillyann, I think it's commonly accepted that Saturday IS the Sabbath, but beings we're not Jewish and attend a temple, I don't think it matters as far as we're concerned.
Col. 2:16-17 says: "Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ."
" One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind."~Rom.14:5
As Christians set free from the old covenant, I think we should approach every day with the additude of; 'this is the day The Lord hath made, I will rejoice and be glad in it'.
Maybe someone else has some thoughts on the sabbath and would share them...

No I don't think it was/is wrong...After all we also went on Wed. and Fri. as well, they aren't the Sabbath either. But it would be OK by me if it was changed to Saturday...but I don't see that happening. Being free, means that we're free...and I won't take the time to explain what 'being free' don't mean.

First you've got to define the Sabbath.
Is it a day to go to Church (not the building) or a day of rest? The
passages in the OT seem to indicate that it was to be a day of rest... we
(well... Christendom) have turned it into something unrecognizable. Course
I'm only speaking of those who actually think that they are under the ten
commandments and need to 'keep' it. Those who are of that persuasion
generally get it wrong on two counts; first they get the day wrong, and
secondly they don't really 'keep' it like God commanded.-- Ex 16:29-30: 29
See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you
on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place,
let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. 30 So the people rested
on the seventh day.
Here is a passage that shows how serious God was about the Sabbath and it
might help our modern-day-legalists decide to move into the new covenant
era!
Numbers 15:32-36 And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness,
they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day. And they that
found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all
the congregation. And they put him in ward, because it was not declared
what should be done to him. And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be
surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones
without the camp. And all the congregation brought him without the camp,
and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the LORD commanded Moses.
Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "not under the Law", eh?
Blessings,
William

Possibly he was referring to the the fact that the early Church celebrated
"the Lord's day" which was the first day of the week, the day of the
resurrection. Sabbath means the seventh day. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't
have confused the seventh with the first. He could have been referring to
Sunday being the Sabbath, metaphorically, in that we set that day aside
for gathering together, hearing the Word, worshiping, etc..

William

I have discussed this matter a few times with SDA's as well as some strict Sunday sabbatarians. Frankly, I think that the Lord is much more concerned with the fact that we DO set aside a day of rest and worship rather than focusing on exactly what day of the week we do so. For those of us who set aside Sunday, it actually functions as the 7th day of the week, even though technically it is the first day. We tend to work from Monday through Saturday and rest on Sunday. In that sense, Sunday IS the 7th day.
From a historical perspective, the SDA's are right. The first day of the week became the "Christian" sabbath in order to accommodate the pagans and make Christianity distinct from Judaism. However, if we are not told in the New Testament to celebrate it on the 7th day of the week per the calendar, then we should not tell anyone else to do so, either.
"One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind." Romans 14:5 I believe that Paul was talking about the sabbath here, which would have been difficult for him having been a pharisee and having sabbath observance so ingrained in his identity as a Jew. He seems to be saying that every day is the Lord's day, and none is more special than another. However, we know that the principle of setting aside a day of rest and worship still carried over. It's just that the day of rest is not more holy than any other. Every day, and everything that we do, is to be holy to the Lord.
I do get concerned when I see good Christian folk ignoring the "day of rest" principle and burning themselves out. The Lord created it for us. If He rested from His works in creation, certainly we must follow His example.
Amazed smitten astonished stunned floored blown away astounded shocked flabbergasted surprised wonderfully devastated awed shattered overwhelmed incredulous speechless sense of wonder at the love of God.
