When I researched this word, It was a surprise that it meant what it did. It is something that the word is even there because it is not what the Hebrew English would use in O.T.. I love this word and it was a reminder of what today is. Yom Kippur.
Though not under the law, it is the day for me of rejoicing about Jesus and his making atonement for my life to be saved.
The word is in Rom. 3:25. it is propitiation. it is the English for a Greek word. hilasterion. used of the cover of the ark of the covenant in the Holy of holies which was sprinkled with the blood of the expiatory-- (propitiation) victim. On day of atonement yearly--Yom Kippur. Jesus the Lamb offered himself as that victim. That is why it is called the mercy seat.
How can that apply to Jesus??? The O.T. priests offered a victims blood for atonement. the ark was a covenant. Jesus made a everlasting covenant. with his blood. So how do we get his blood on the ark?? He was dead or not movable to go into the Holies. God tore the Vail in half. Jesus spirit went to the Father.
Arch. Ron Wyatt has shown the answer. The earthquake went by the cross and his blood went down through the earth and landed on the mercy seat. Jesus when he was raised from the dead told Mary Magdalene in Jn. 20:17 He had not ascended to the Father yet so don't touch him.
That is why I believe his holy blood did also make propitiation while he was on the cross. it did land on the mercy seat . He was pierced while on the cross. He was the Lamb of God. Also he was the Shepherd. most important he was a substitute in our place and just like with Mary sin cannot touch him.
faith-- forsake all I trust him. Baal-- believe apostacy all lost. bible-- believe in bible life eternal.
