OK here's the question that has been on everyones mind.
It will be interesting to see what kind of responses we get because there are a lot of answers. To my mind though there is only one answer that really fits. Concerning our world our history as humans and the theology of the bible.
Here's the question:
Why is Jesus coming back?

Why is Jesus coming back?
To restore His Kingdom:
6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
Acts 1:6 (KJV)
And to manifest Himself to the whole world:
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Phil 2:9-11 (KJV)

I agree with Ron that He's coming back to restore the earth-- that's what He going to do-- but why? That is a little tougher!
The terrestrial experiment must be explained by examining the mind of God which is a little harder than the average capability of the finite mind. It requires an ability to read the KJV Bible <grin> from cover to cover.
I think the reason lies in the fact that He has revealed His character/attributes to the created order and then, to raise the stakes, made promises to the created order that only He could fulfill. As He fulfills these great promises to His creation, we are forced on every level-- to GLORIFY HIM!
Blessings,
William

Close JW but no cigar. The right answer is the one I'm going to give of course.
There is one answer that to my mind covers everything. I'm not speaking here so much of eternity but our world ,history, bible theology.
Here's my answer.
Luke 1/26-33 He is coming to take the throne of his father David. At which point he will restore Israel to its proper place as head of the nations. It is from that position he does everything else. The prophecy by the angel even speaks of it into eternity.

You're right Mark, there is more than one answer.
But because of God's LOVE and MERCY ranks high on my list.
Of course there's many things He will DO at that time...(restore His Kingdom, judge all men, reign for ever, ect.)
ps. Keep the cigar...
“But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us,”

I gave a little more thought to this issue. To some extent I know I'm splitting theological hairs here. But sometimes things come up in my heart and I ponder them. When that happens I like to put everything neatly in order. You guys are just going to have to put up with me.

To establish the rule of God on earth.
